I have been working on Cherry Lime Dog since 2017, a mix of my Black Dog and Mean Gene’s (Freeborn Selections) 2016 HGAS Cherry Lime Pop. Don’t ask me what HGAS stands for, it was written in sharpie on the bag they came in and I don’t mess with the information the breeder passes to me. The Cherry Lime Pop was tall, needing caging support as it stretched on the foggy coast. It also wasn’t that stable when it came to intersex expression and would occasionally throw hermaphrodite flowers on the bottom branch nodes (meaning the female flowers could produce male flowers that could potentially lead to unwanted seeds). Mean Gene had informed me of all this, but knew I had the tools to do something special with it. He knew it would do well on the humid coast where I was breeding and we both thought the combination with the extremely stable and hardy Black Dog could potentially result in offspring without these issues.
Mean Gene is one of my favorite breeders of all time and the Cherry Lime Pop, despite the aforementioned drawbacks, was no exception. The expressions from the seeds he gifted me had some of the most unique and euphoric aromas and flavors I had ever experienced and I was instantly in love. I pollinated my favorite expression with my Black Dog BC4 (4x back cross) and the resulting expressions the next year were jaw dropping gorgeous. More importantly, she held onto the mouth-watering flavor of the Cherry Lime Pop mixed with the berries and gas from the Black Dog. The result was a fermented cherry cola fizz with purple pixie stick and gas that smelled and tasted like some magical ambrosia reserved only for the gods. She was also completely stable and showed no signs of intersex issues taking on a very study well-balanced plant structure with a thick hardy stalk and branches.
On top of the extreme beauty and desirable expressions, I found them to have my favorite flavors and effects of that year. I knew I had something really special so I decided to take her down many paths in the next year’s breeding projects. I continued the filial (sibling pairing) generations making F1, F2, F3, F4 and now F5 generations, but I also worked on making back crosses and and new crosses with other varieties. I selected the best F2 and back crossed it with my favorite 2012 Black Dog selection resulting in the Cherry Lime Dog BC1. I then selected my favorite male and female expressions and made the BC1F2
